Stop 7 Jaggar MuseumThe Thomas A. Jaggar Museum was our final stop of the evening, at around 5.30pm, as the best time to see the glowing crater was after dark. The glow came from the reflection of sulfer dioxide from the magma about 100m (330 ft) deep within the crater. We weren’t able to see any flowing lava during our trip, so this was an exciting sight and a reminder that Kilauea is, in fact, an active volcano. The USGS offers a live panorama view of the Halema`uma`u crater. The three images are compiled from a research camera found on the observation tower of the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (USGS, 2010).
