The Kohala Coffee Mill (Fig. 1) is located off of Highway 270, within the North Kohala town of Hawai. It’s a café, with outdoor and indoor seating, and serves sandwiches, desserts, tea, coffee and ice cream. You can view the Kohala Coffee Mill menu at http://www.kona123.com/kohalacoffeemill.html.
The Kohala Coffee Mill is part of the North Kohala Eat Locally Grown Campaign, which is a campaign to get “people from North Kohala to commit to an ‘eat local’ action” (North Kohola Eat Locally Grown, 2010). The café supports the campaign by offering its customers 100% Kohala coffee and a variety of ice creams, sherbets, and frozen yogurts supplied by Tropical Dreams Ice Cream Company.
The Tropical Dreams Ice Cream Company is a small company located in the Lalamilo Farm lots in Waimea on the big island of Hawai‘i that’s over 20 years old. Tropical Dreams gets all of its cream from dairies on the island, and has been working with Hawai‘i Tropical Fruit Grower’s Association to “develop new flavors and expand the use of local fruit” (Tropical Dreams Ice Cream, n.d.). The company also plans on using its five acre property to produce fruits to use in their products.
